Eventually, every witch comes to a place in their practice, where they want to begin creating their own spells and rituals. This can be an exciting time; but, it’s often filled with self-doubt and confusion. Where do you begin? What supplies are you going to need? What type of spell do I create? Should I perform an entire ritual, or just a quick spell? I get it. So, I created this tutorial to, hopefully, answer these questions, and give you a starting point to creating your own spells.
It is always best to begin with a bit of planning. I find it helpful to write everything down in a spell journal. By keeping notes on the process, and actually writing out your spell, you can come back to edit it, reread it, and record your outcome. Leave a page or two empty, after your written spell, to take any notes on results, or changes.
The first question to ask yourself is what do you want to manifest. Are you looking to draw something to you? Is there something you want to rid yourself of? Once you’ve answered that question, you can decide what type of spell you want to create. How you’ve been practicing so far will help you in your decision. If you’ve been performing elaborate ritual magick, you may want to stick with that style for your first few spells.
When you’ve figured out what you want to manifest, and the type of spell you’re going to create, you should begin researching correspondences, dates, supplies, and anything else you will need to complete your spell. For example, if you’re wanting to remove someone from your life, you might research the best herbs, crystals, roots, and stones, that can help you in banishing work. You may also want to plan for dates where the moon cycle is waning, or a new moon. Write out everything you decide will go into your spell. So, if you need black candles, a jar, vinegar, a chili pepper, and a piece of paper to write their name on, add it to your spell notes. Also, write the time and date when you plan to perform your spell, in your spell notes.
Next, you will want to write down any deities or spirits you will call upon to help you in your spell work. If you’ve been working with specific deities or spirits successfully for awhile, it’s probably best to stick with those in the beginning. If not, you may want to research what deities are known to help with what you wish to manifest.
Now, you have the bones of your spell work. It’s time to start writing out your spell. In my experience, it’s best to start your spell by inviting your chosen deities or spirits, to aid you. I usually start with something like: “Oh, mighty Hekate, Queen of Witches, guide to the lost…”. Then, you want to state your intent. In my example, I would say something like: “I ask for your help in removing (name person) from my life.”
You can make your spell as fancy, or as easy, as you would like. Just move from your inner intuition. What is it telling you to write? Do you want your spell to rhyme? Do you want to add a visualization? Whatever you decide will be right. Have no doubts.
Typically, I’ll end my spell with gratitude for my chosen deity, and a brief closing, like: “Thank you, mighty Hekate, for your aid in removing (person) from my life. May you also help me heal from the trauma they caused me. As I will it, it is done.”
Now that you have your spell written, you may want to write down the steps or actions your spell will require. For example, if I was performing a jar banishing spell, I would write out the specific moments, during the spell, that actions would be taking place. Like when I say, “I ask for your help in removing (person) from my life.”, I would be placing the baneful contents into the jar, closing it, and melting a black candle over it.
When you’re done writing everything out, you should have a full spell, with all the action steps perfectly planned. Your next steps should be collecting the needed supplies, and performing your spell.
Most of us complicate things in our minds. We can also feel as though we’re not capable of doing things right. By taking your time, and planning your spell, you will see that you are actually quite powerful. Your own words, put into a spell, is so much stronger than any spell someone else has written. Just give it a try.
Repetition will make you more confident. If your first, or even first few spells, don’t manifest, don’t get discouraged. Because you’ve written everything down in your journal, you can go back to your spell, edit it, tweak it, or change it in some way, and try it again. Just keep practicing. Below, I’ve added a few extra tips that have helped me.
Spell Tips
1~ Try formulating your spells in a different language. If you speak more than one language, formulate spells in each of those languages. See which language you get the best results from. For me, I get the quickest results when I do spells in Hebrew, with French and Latin taking a close second place. The first spells I ever learned were in French. Hebrew I only began learning about four years ago. But, the first spell I cast in Hebrew manifested my desired result immediately. Thinking it was a fluke, I did another spell. This spell was a much longer, twelve day spell, for a much harder to achieve result. On the thirteenth day, I received my result. Hebrew may not work for you; but, if you’re not getting results, try a different language.
2~ Sing your intent. You don’t have to sing well to do this. For some reason, the universe and the entities I evoke, love when I sing my spell. It’s actually pretty fun, too. Go ahead and give it try, if it seems like something you’d enjoy.
3~ Dance, dance, dance! My old friend, Chicken Man, taught me the power that dance could add to my craft. Many cultures implement dancing into their rituals. New Orleans Voodoo uses dance to induce a trancelike state during spells and rituals. It’s highly effective. Dancing can create energy that can then be transferred into a tool, like a candle, while stating or singing your intent. If it helps to play some music, go ahead and hit play.
4~ At the end of your spell, once you have put your intention out to the universe, briefly imagine what it would look like if you manifested your desire. Try to put as much detail as possible into your imagination. For example, if you did a spell to gain beauty, imagine yourself looking into a mirror. What does beauty look like to you? What would be different about you? Hold that image in your head for about a minute, before letting it fade away. If you have trouble creating visions in your head, try verbally repeating the changes you want to manifest, as if they’ve already happened. So, in the example above, you might say things like “I look beautiful. My skin is so clear and flawless. My eyes sparkle. I am so gorgeous.” Do this chant for about a minute.
5~ End your spell with a kind demand that the universe grant your request. Most witches use the phrase, “So mote it be.” I say, “It is done.” You can say whatever you’re comfortable with stating. Don’t be wishy-washy about it. In your mind, you should be expecting the universe to give you what you want.
6~ After your spell is done, clean up, and then, walk away. Do not think about gaining your result. Feel confident in your magic. Know that you will receive what you asked to manifest. Trust the magic. If you start to think about it, busy yourself doing an activity you have to concentrate on. The more you think about the spell or the result, the more distrust you show in your magic. The last thing you want is the universe, or entities you evoked, to think either you’re weak, or even worse, that you don’t trust them. Either way, it’s not a good move. If you’re working on a spell, over a course of days, each day, after your spell is done, forget about it until the next day’s working.
7~ Don’t forget to have fun! One of the things that made it so easy for me to leave my last coven, was the boredom of it all. We were always doing the same rituals, in the same way, over and over again. Ugh, I was dying. Magic should be interesting. It should evolve with you as you grow and learn new ideas. Keep it fun and intriguing. If you feel things starting to get stagnant, add something, change something.
As usual, I’d love to hear about your spell creations. Please let me know in the comments.
Blessed Be!
